Step 11

“Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood God, praying only for knowledge of his will and the power to carry that out.”

Improve our conscious contact with God

Recovery is all about constructing a new life for yourself. Steps 10 – 12 are the “building” part of your reconstruction. You’re going to build your new life by building new habits. This second set of habits centers around your need to improve your conscious contact with the God of your understanding.

You’ve met the Architect. That was back in Step 2 and 3. I’m talking about God, your Higher Power. Don’t think step 11 is optional. You must maintain daily communication with the Architect.

A.  Through prayer – Talking to God

· Conscious Gratitude When do you pray? Gratitude can be a daily mindset you engage in throughout the entire day             ___________________________________________________

II  Ask for knowledge of God’s Will

You don’t know everything. But you have a basic knowledge of God’s will for you. (You know God wants you to stay sober.)

Life is complicated. And knowing what to do in any given situation is often not clear. You must ask for God’s direction. Everyday. Develop the habit of asking for directions! When there’s a fork in the road, you want to be clear on which direction to take.

III  Receive power to carry out God’s Will

They say knowledge is power. But knowing what to do and actually doing it are two different things. The Serenity Prayer gives us some clues into what this power looks like, and how it feels.

“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

A.  Serenity to accept what cannot be changed (“Thy will, not mine, be done”)                                              ____________________________________________________
