Step 12

“Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to addicts who still suffer, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.”

A spiritual awakening as a result of these steps

Recovery is all about constructing a new life for your self. Steps 10-12 are the “building” part of your reconstruction. You’re going to build a new life by building new habits. The third set of habits center around your willingness to give back to the fellowship. Part of your recovery is “paying it forward.” This means working with other addicts. Your success in this program is based on the concept “one addict working with another addict.” You are able to do this work because you have a new purpose and a new power.

A.  Life takes on a new purpose

· Saved from ‘using’ to sobriety: Your new direction in life is to let go and let God. You are learning to give up your obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors ____________________________________________________

II  Try to carry this message to others

Did you know that you are now a messenger? That’s right. You’re on a mission, and you have a message. But in order to carry this message, you will need to know what you are talking about. Your experience will give you the words to say. And if you don’t have an answer for the questions that people ask, you have a sponsor and the entire fellowship to help you along the way.

A.  When we help others, we help ourselves

· “If you want to keep it, you must give it away” Learn to take action even when you don’t feel like it. When you give love, you get love. ____________________________________________________

III  Practice these principles in all our affairs

To be effective in your work with other addicts, it will require some integrity on your part. There is nothing more hypocritical than a person who instructs others to live and act a certain way, but fails to live it themselves. Your daily devotion to the principles found in the 12 steps will keep you sober and will empower you to make a difference in other lives.

A.  Honesty and Integrity

· Be on the level No more lies and deception. Always current. ____________________________________________________
