Step 3

“Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood God.”

I  Decide to Surrender yourself

Why would you want to turn yourself over to a Higher Power? I’ll tell you why: It’s because you haven’t got a clue what to do! And unless you want to remain stuck in your addiction, you had better get some help.

There are friends in the fellowship that can assist you, and can give you encouragement and wisdom along the way. But unless you decide to look to your Higher (or Inner) power, you are going to fight (resist) them all the way.

Addicts don’t trust anyone. Unless we have entrusted our lives into the care of the God of our understanding, we will accept no help whatsoever from anyone. Surrender means we are ready to trust our Higher Power to guide us all the way back.

II  Decide to Trust God

When we first began attending meetings, we weren’t sure who we could trust. But in time we soon began to realize that the people in recovery were our allies, not our enemies.

The fellowship became a way for Higher Power to guide us, empower us and supply us with wisdom. We learned along the way that the God of our understanding can be trusted. Why? Because of the love we all share together. For it is Love that leads us to God.

Trusting God means that we really don’t trust our own judgment. We acted like fools when we were in the driver’s seat, making all the wrong turns, and traveling way too fast. Trusting God with our lives means that we surrender to God’s love and God’s care.

The Third Step Prayer

1.  Willingness: Are you ready to surrender your will (your thoughts and decisions) and your life (your actions, how you live your life) over to the care of God?

If you answered ‘Yes’ you are ready to take step three.

2.  Here is a prayer that we can pray together:

“God, I offer myself to You – to build with me and to do with me as You will. Relieve me of the bondage to self, that I may better do Your will. Take away my character defects that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Your Power, Your Love and Your way of life. May I do Your will always. Amen”

(Alternative prayer)

“Higher power, I give myself over to your care. I trust you to build my life according to your will. I ask that you release me from selfishness and slavery to my own wants that I may better live out your will in my life. Help me to live a victorious life that others may see your power working through me. May your will be done in and through me always. Amen”
