Step 7

“Humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings.”

Humbly ask God

I was always under the impression that humility had something to do with how I viewed myself. Somehow, I was supposed to regard myself as ‘pond scum’ – helpless and unworthy. But that view of humility couldn’t be any further from the truth. In fact, a very different kind of humility is required when we work the seventh step…

A.  A Humble Attitude

a) A realistic view of God (Creator)

· How do you view your Higher power? Is your Higher Power compassionate or judgmental – willing to do as you ask?                  ____________________________________________________

· Is your Higher power able to do as you ask? Explain… ____________________________________________________

b) A realistic view of yourself (creature)

· How do you view yourself? Are you ‘worthy’ of God’s help, or are you just ‘pond scum’? ____________________________________________________

· What does ‘humility’ mean? Are you ready to ask? Or are you too afraid? ____________________________________________________

B.  A Humble Prayer

a) Recognize who God is (Be confident)

· What attitude should you have when you ask God? Do you really expect God to answer your prayers?                                ____________________________________________________

____________________________________________________

b) Recognize who you are (Be specific)

· What attitude do you have about yourself? What is your part in all of this? Do you have a role to play in the removal of your defects? ____________________________________________________

II  To remove your shortcomings

If you approach God with an attitude anything less than humble, don’t expect God to hear your prayers. Do you think that God is able to do as we ask if we have an arrogant or cynical attitude? Let’s take a look at our arrogance and cynicism. We may have some funny ideas about pride, just as we do about humility…

A. A Confident Attitude

a) Affirmation(s)

· Do you have any false beliefs about God? How can you affirm that God is able and willing to remove your defects of character?    ____________________________________________________

____________________________________________________

b) Visualization

· Are there ways you can visualize having your defects removed? ____________________________________________________

____________________________________________________

c) Declaration

· Have you considered giving thanks in advance? Would that be too presumptuous and proud? Can you ask expecting an answer? ____________________________________________________

____________________________________________________

B.  A Confident Prayer

a) Please remove

· Do you know what you want removed? Do you intend to be specific? ____________________________________________________
____________________________________________________
____________________________________________________

b) Please replace

· Are there virtues that could replace your defects? Do you know what to ask for? Are you confident that God will hear your prayer? ____________________________________________________

c) The Seventh Step prayer

“My Creator, I am now willing that you should have all of me, good and bad. I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to you and my fellows. Grant me strength, as I go out from here, to do your bidding.  Amen.”
